Ground cover in enclosure

Post  Yorky on Sat Dec 20, 2008 7:40 pm

The pullet enclosure has turned in to a 'mudbath'. can anyone suggest some ground cover ? I thought of bark mulch - is that a good idea?

Hi Yorky,

Bark mulch/chippings should be OK. If you have the odd hen who likes to try and eat anything then I'd make sure you go for bigger and more chunkier variety of chippings to deter her. Alternatively you could use hemcore or aubiose which is normally used for horses. It has a good absorbancy rate and safe for the chooks. You can buy this in massive bags from most livestock/equestrian stores and costs around £12.

To give the chooks a break from trapsing around in the mud I put a few branches in their enclosure which they use.

Happy Christmas!! santa
