I have had 3 back garden girls since the 9th August and I can honestly say I wish I'd done it years ago. We adore them and I think they like us from the number of eggs we have had. When the weather was good, we'd sit in the garden with a bottle of wine, just chilling and enjoying their antics.

They are cleaned out once a fortnight and diatom is sprinkled around the coop and in their feed. It is usually my daughter who does this so today I did it myself. I replaced the lining newspaper, scraped the perches and sprinkled diatom around. I also sprinkled diatom around the hens tails and vents which seem to be the worst affected areas. Is there anything else I can do? I haven't used disinfectant and would ... I've bought them a metal food ball this year. It's like a metal wire ball which you fill with treats or greens and hang up for them to keep them entertained. Plus, it's so frosty here and we've had snow so the grass is hard to come by so hopefully they'll be thankful for the extra greens too! So anyone else spoil their girls or am I just a bit OTT? I was wondering if it is possible to catch thread worms from chickens or their poo?
My 3 year old daughter has caught them from somewhere, and although its most likely to be from someone at her nursery i was concerened incase it was anything to do with our hens.

We have had our two hens for two weeks, a black star and a goldine. They were kept in their run for the first week and I now have them free range in the garden for 2 hours when I get home at night and also all weekend where possible. The black star has started to pace furiously up and down the run as soon as they come out of the eglu and this goes on for some time, and possibly often during the day. They both look and sound healthy but no eggs from one of them!

One of them does have lice and red mites and I've been dusting them with diatom.
