I'm interested to know why people decided to get into keeping chooks.

For me, I decided to keep hens for a few reasons.

A couple of years ago we moved from the suburbs of Manchester to a more rural location further North. We had a patch of land where we decided to plant a few young fruit trees and my OH was into permaculture at the time. We joked about getting chickens now that we were in the country but more and more, it became something I started to seriously consider and so began ...

Hi all,

I'm relatively experienced with small chook flocks but a newbie to Japanese quail. I have 3 quail hens & one cockeral. The cock performs his manly duties with great vigor. He is a cream colour with markings around his head. The hens are darker with natural dark bars all over. I think they are a different variety to the cock. They are in a large (approx 12 m squared- its a huge garden block) well ventilated pen in the garden with lots of natural shelters etc. I have tried to emulate ...

Hi

I'm new here... about to take delivery of my first chickens and had a question. They won't be let out of their run immediately as I want them to get used to where they are, however, they will eventually come out. I have a small veg patch in my garden as well as other plants. I have used slug pellets, however, I do get the kind that are meant to be safe for pets, though whether this includes if it's eaten by a chicken I don't know.

I haven't put any down for at least a week now ...

Dear friends

We have 2 chickens needing a holiday home for the week 18 to 25 July because they are simply refusing to come with us to Italy, claiming that the Sorrentine coast is "soooo 1990's" and that the heat and dry air plays havoc with their feathers.

As such we have agreed to fund their plans for a holiday of their own, ideally in the West Midlands region, (they currently reside in Solihull) which would minimise the travelling time and save their poor chauffeur from ...

I have 3 ex-batts which I rescued in aug 08, they have all recovered from their previous life in a cage and live in a run on the lawn. They have been laying very well (75 eggs last month) and all appear bright and healthy. This morning when I let them out of the Eglu one was lying dead on the floor. There are no visible signs of disease, wounding or injury. I'm not exactly sure of their age, but they are around 18 months to 2 years old. The remaining 2 girls seem fine, but I'm worried that I ...

I don't go so far as to wrap anything up but I do buy them a little something for Christmas.

I've bought them a metal food ball this year. It's like a metal wire ball which you fill with treats or greens and hang up for them to keep them entertained. Plus, it's so frosty here and we've had snow so the grass is hard to come by so hopefully they'll be thankful for the extra greens too!

So anyone else spoil their girls or am I just a bit OTT?

We have had our two hens for two weeks, a black star and a goldine. They were kept in their run for the first week and I now have them free range in the garden for 2 hours when I get home at night and also all weekend where possible.

The black star has started to pace furiously up and down the run as soon as they come out of the eglu and this goes on for some time, and possibly often during the day. She looks like a possessed crazy woman, ...

I have three pullets and one of them has just started laying. The problem is that it is laying from the upper perch in the coop during the night rather than in the nest box. As a result the eggs are breaking as it is almost a 2 foot drop.
Does anyone know how I can encourage it to lay in the nest box?

Farting chicken!

Well the other morning, I let my girls out of the coop, sorted their feed out and was about to go and get some breakfast when Lily, one of my Light Sussex girls let rip mid dump!!

I've never heard one of my girls fart before and it didn't half make me chuckle! The neighbours must think I'm mad seeing me belly-aching on my own surrounded by hens.

Anyone else having a trumping chook?

Hello

4 weeks ago i re-homed 4 exbattery chickens, i am totally new to having chickens. One of my girls " paxo" started off as a very confidant lady she is the smallest of them all. But the last 4/5 days i have noticed she has lost her sparkle, she is still eating and drinking but the other 3 have started pecking her all the time and now. Any ideas what i should do about the pecking and anything to make her better.

I can't believe it's happened.

We went out today at lunchtime and we were back again by 3pm and IT been!

There were feathers everywhere. I think IT's had two of the girls, but I'll have to wait a bit longer before I close the hatch to the chicken shed, just in case they managed to find cover somewhere.

I saw all the fathers outside the hut, dashed inside and one of the girls was on the floor in her side. I scooped her up and I've been sat with her on my lap ever since. Her legs seem ...

Well I believe most people who choose to keep chickens end up giving their girls and boys names but it can be a difficult process so I thought we could all post names we think make great names for chooks. Here's my attempt:

Names I use and have used in the past which generally follow the pattern for old:

Bess (RIP you little cracker)

Nora

Phyllis

Ruby

Dotty

Geraldine

Emily

Olive

Grace

Peggy (RIP my beautiful girl)

Lily

Lucy

Other names which I think make good ...

Hello all!

We recently got a plush new house for our two chickens, however one of them has decided not go back in in the evening, we have found her hiding in a bush a few times and she has also been hiding in their run. She seems to be ok other than this, her comb is red and pert.

Any thoughts?

Thanks
