The Yorkshire Gang

Post  Chuckyduck on Tue Jun 24, 2008 11:13 pm

We are made up of 5 girls and one boy. The five of us girls used to live in Telford but were fortunate enough to be rescued by the Battery Hen Welfare Trust in February this year. We cannot tell you how old we are, but we can remember that we used to be very bald, but since we came living here we've got our feathers back. We don't have names as such, but we know that when our owner calls "Chuckyducks" we know it's tea time.
When we got here there was another girl living here, she told us that she made her way here one day from a house down the road and that she preferred living here, so she stayed. Everyone in the village knew her as Henrietta. She used to go and tap on people's doors, usually at weekends as more people were home then, and they used to give her allsorts of goodies. Unfortunately she went to the big hen coop in the sky a few weeks ago and we all still miss her, we all thought of her as our Mum.
A few days after our arrival we were joined by a really good looking boy, he tells us he's a Sussex, also known as "Shorts". The lady who he lived with before was worried that he may annoy her neighbours with the noise he makes. We've all taken to him, he finds us allsorts of good things to eat and generally keeps his eye on us. Mind you, we thought we'd lost him the first day we were allowed to go outside. He'd taken a wrong turn at the gate and finished up in the field at the side of our house. Our owners were frantically looking for him as there are foxes living around here but they couldn't get him home before it went dark. We thought we might never see him again, but at 4.30am the following morning we heard him making a real din, don't suppose the neighbours were impressed. Needless to say he was collected from the neighbours garden and he's never wandered since.
We have a really good time everyday now. I doesn't matter if it sunshines or pours with rain, we go out as soon as we can in the morning and we have to be tempted in at nightime with something good to eat. Our owner is into gardening and we find that if we stick close to her when she's digging she finds us some really good juicy worms. She does get cross though when we try and find our own and dig up stuff she's just planted, but we know she loves us really.
Everyone here gets on really well, the 4 dogs, 3 cats and the fish in the pond. Occasionally the sheep come round and we've seen some cows this last week. If the weather is nice we all seem to congregate round the pond in the afternoon and just chill out.......bliss compared to where we used to live

Thank you very much for your kind reply.
We are very lucky to live here, we have a large garden, a field on one side and the moor on the other, so we've loads of places to rummage. We had some visitors today and they made a real fuss of us, we don't mind feedings from their hands at all! I personally had one of my favorite treats today, our man leader pulled over a sheet of wood that had been on the floor for weeks and our real leader, Shorts, (we found out his real name yesterday, Corporal Zingerburger, I think he's german, but a handsome cock), sorry I digress. He called us over with his enimitable cry, "girls come and get it, girls come and get it". He's good like that. He leads us to all the best snap. We had for lunch from under this wood sheet, several types of wood lice, some cracking juicy worms, the odd spider and Beryl had the biggest slug you'd see in at least an hour.
Today our human leaders appear to be calling us names, which is quite strange as we have just been used to being called chickens. With us finding out our real leaders name, it's apparent we have names too. I've mentioned Beryl, we've also got Dot, Axle (when she walks her legs are wide apart), Nelly (short for knocked knees Nelly), lastly Mrs Merton as she's always the first to interview people as they come through the gate.
We've been having early nights these last couple of days, normally we're out and about till around 8pm. We've heard on the grapevine though that next door have got a couple of foxes coming into their garden in the evening. We were a bit cheesed off having to go in early, but now we know the reason why it makes good sense.
We're hoping for some good weather tomorrow, usually when it's sunshining there'll be some gardening or grass cutting going on, that means more worms for us. So fingers crossed everyone.........

I'm sure that won't be a problem, I'll mention it tomorrow when we're all out and about.
I'll tell them all that we'll be famous, I think they'll go for that. I know that the Westie had a bath this morning (boy did he need it) so he won't let the side down. All the other dogs went for a haircut last week, so they'll be presentable. As for us girls, we've had a shower eveyday this week so far, Axle got a real drenching the other night. She was dawdling back home and heavens opened, we did tell her there were black clouds on the way but she took no notice, sometimes you'd think she was a duck she just loves getting wet.
I need to ask our fellow girls out there a question. When they take our pictures do you think we should put some lippy on? Or should we go for the "Au Naturelle" look? It's just that some of my feathers are not up to scratch yet so I was thinking I could divert attention from them.
It was our man leader's birthday a few days ago and he'd had a birthday cake, so he brought us some for us to try. As expected we went nuts, so so sweet it was. Oh and yesterday we tried prawns, they were yummy as well. Apparently the fish like them, so we made a fuss until we got to try them as well.
Ah well, better get to bed, we need to look our best for the roll call tomorrow..night night everyone.
