I feel like a new mummy (but to a chicken)
I have just joined here and thought I'd share my new best friend. I have had her for two days she is a light sussex and I have called Susie.
I am so excited having her but nervious/worried i keep checking she is ok every 10 mins.
Already she has layed two eggs for me, which is like her giving me a big hug, its lovely.

Does she have any other friends?

They are naturally flocking birds, so they prefer being with other chickens but don't feel that you have to rush out and get some more, it'll not harm her.
I'm sure Susie would love a companion or two but be prepared that they might not get on immediately and you may see an aggressive side of Susie. Chickens operate on a pecking order and new additions to the territory can have a bit of a rough time from the existing chooks initially. But don't worry, this is completely normal and once they know their place the pecking order soon settles down and they become the best of friends!
As far as nest boxes go, you don't need 1 nest box per bird. We currently have 8 hens and they share 3 nest boxes and get on fine.

thank you for you advice
thats a great help. ta
wow 8 chooks that be fun times. I am excited about getting more but would not pay £30 again for one now knowing you can rescue eg. mind you Susie is worth every penny as she is so friendly clucks away to us and doesnt run away form my two young children which is nice for them. also i have had egg already too.
now i need to invesigate into how to rescue around my area. once i have a perch in place.
your help in much appreciated.

Re: I feel like a new mummy (but to a chicken)
I have rescued one hen in the past (it's not a common thing in the highlands and it's rare to come across). She was a gem bless her. We called her Ruby, she was a brown hen and from a farm and she laid THE Biggest eggs. She had no feathers on her head, chest and under carriage but after months of care, covering her in purple gentian violets, spraying her with some god awful smelling anti pecking product we managed to get her back to her normal healthy self. But because of breeding methods she had problems with her egg production system and eventually passed away after suffering from suspected peritonitis.
I think it's a good idea to give a poor hen a good home but be prepared that they won't lay as prolifically and may not last too long (obviously depending on their age and breed).
