New to forum - please can anyone advise re chicks?

Post  Sarahpooh on Wed Jul 11, 2012 12:09 pm

Hello wise chicken-keeping folk

I have had some ex-battery hens and a motley assortment of other hens for a few years now and I also have a cockerel called Angus, they all live in the garden, they do have a fenced off area but most days I open the gate and let them wander at their own will, I also have 2 cats and 2 dogs (all this is relevant, I promise)

My problem is this: while I was on holiday my friend who was housesitting didn't collect the eggs and as a result I have 3 pekin bantam mummies and 3 baby chicks, they are now 3 and a half weeks old. Before the eggs hatched I put the broody hens in a separate little hen house with a small run attached, the run is 120cm long by 85cm wide, I put them in there because I thought the chicks might need protecting from the cockerel and the other hens when they hatched. They all seem to be fine, and I was just wondering if it would be safe yet to let them out of the run (with the mummies) as it is quite a small area for them or will they be attacked? (I have raised chicks before with an incubator but not by letting the hens hatch them so I have no idea, I presume the hens know what they're doing!)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated,

Many thanks

Sarah

Hello sarah

Is your hens a first time mother? If its so then its probably better to keep the baby chicks separate from your dogs and cats. Usually first time/young mothers dont really know how to take care of small chicks. The males dont really bother the chicks much. My grandmas house have several cats and chickens. The kittens will always try to 'play' with the chicks but the size different makes it dangerous. Cats will put the chicks in their mouth trust me on that.
