Hen with strange leg action

Post  hazelevans on Thu Dec 24, 2009 4:30 pm

Hello everyone.

I need a bit of advice about one our 6 hens that has developed a very strange leg action just before the snows hit. She is a 6 month old black hybrid, who has not started to lay yet. She is the lowest member of the hens but is well and eating normally. She has started raising her feet right up under her breast every step she takes. Now that it is so wet,she is catching her claws on her wet breast feathers. Her feet seem to be completely normal. We have had chickens for about 6 years and have never seen anything like it. Some suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks

Hiya Hazel!

Is your chook limping at all? Have you checked to see if there's a splinter or even a tiny cut on the ball of her foot? If you press on the ball of her foot does she retract her leg at all?
